The Peace is a refreshing response to todays hip-hop-pop. Their fast-paced rap, backed with pianos, acoustic guitars and injected with Vermont-inspired lyrics introduces the music world to a genre of music coined “hip folk.” Whatever they call it, it certainly works for The Peace, bringing a freshness and realness to music that is as unique as their style.
Hip folk is a new variety of music that mixes rapping with more mellow, folksy background melodies to give the music a different sound than hip-hop. The Peace use the latest release, Mass EP, to showcase their talent in this new genre, and they do it brilliantly. From the upbeat “Goin’ To Yoga” to the reflective “This is Life,” the songs on the album are a solid selection of their finest works.
The band’s lyrics are refreshingly relatable. “Free” is among my favorite tracks - it refers back to the idealistic simpler times, paralleled in their unassuming, yet still powerful melodies.
The Peace’s sound is more lighthearted than most hip-hop and funkier than most acoustic rock, and it is a sound worth following. The band keeps their music interesting by being unpredictable both lyrically and melodically, and that’s something that is difficult to find in todays pop scene. By taking the best of two seemingly opposing musical styles, The Peace creates an entirely new genre that they showcase beautifully on the Mass EP.
