Food Will Win The War On The Upswing

Food Will Win The War, friends of Hip Folk, brought new songs and a reignited energy last night at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory. One of their biggest headliners yet, Rob Ward led the rising band to a solid, tight set with immeasurable energy between Food and the audience. 4 picks dropped and 1 broken string later, Ward had a birthday show to remember! Hip Folk Relaxin' at Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago

It's well known that I'm a messianic follower of Modest Mouse, so the Hip Folk staff flew out to Chicago this weekend to party hard with the 54,000 music lovers in Union Park.

Hip Folk's favorite Pitchfork shows so far:

Mid-year Stocking Stuffer: Landlord, Weary

Jake Weary (of The Mother Funk Ya's) and leader of the collaboration band Landlord (Weary & Groundislava) is on top of his game. I don't say this too often, but this guy is going to be huge. His debut mixtape, "The Hard Love Mixtape" will be available FREE on Hip Folk very, very soon. It's hard to specify his genre, so I'd say he's a mix of electronic/hip-hop/dub-step with a Los Angeles electro-pop-scene aura. Click above to download Lanlord's FREE self-titled EP!

Justin Walker is a native of the great Charm City. He has always been a creative person, however music has always been the best way for him to express himself creatively. Inspired by musicians new and old Justin draws on a wide array of musical genres to shape his current sound. From hard core electronic to old school soul music, You can definitely hear the musical "buffet" he serves to his listeners.

Coming from Baltimore, Justin's background is completely responsible for such an eclectic kid. He was able to see both sides of the socioeconomic spectrum and in turn soak up many different cultures. At the bottom of it all music is meant to evoke some sort of emotion, and what better way to bring people together than a party.

The Pregame is Justin's first effort to submerge people into his world which is a never ending fiesta. Riddled with the eclectic sound that defines him, Justin incorporates remixes of his favorite artists and bands to create a collage of sound that will be the signature of Justin W.

Hip Folk Records will be printing Justin's "Pregame" and will be available for free digital download and CD very soon.

Favorites of the Week: Fortune Family

Fortune Family is a hip hop group that records, writes and produces their own music from the suburbs of Philadelphia. The group consists of three members, Sherif Hamid aka “Reefer,” who attends NYU, Owen Hobson and Matt Kane, both juniors in High School. The group released their first mixtape “The Altered State” in June 2009. Playing at parties and dances, they began to increase their following within the Main Line. Realizing their potential, Fortune Family began recording again and put out their second mixtape, “The Dead Rapper’s Society” in April of 2010. They got serious about their music and started reaching out to different websites. GoodMusicAllDay, a top college music blog, dubbed DRS “a dope mixtape” and FreshNewTracks featured their singles, “Circus,” “Lights Glow” and “Pray” with warm reception on their website. Brobible also featured several of their singles in their “New Music You Should Know About” and “Download of the Day” sections, creating a buzz within the college blogosphere. In addition, Reefer, being Egyptian, was recognized by Fen Magazine, who named him one of five up and coming Arab American artists to keep your eye on for April of 2010.

Their first single, Circus has topped 5,000 views on Youtube and their channel has over 25,000 views in the small time the songs have been up. They soon realized they needed to put a face to their music, prompting them to gather up a team of NYU film students to shoot a music video for their single “Lights Glow.” Exceeding all expectations, the video received over 2,000 views in two nights and has been already featured on Brobible and FreshNewTracks. Hip hop heads began to take notice, and their Facebook fan page has reached over 1,850 followers and is increasing by the day. Fortune Family is looking to increase their exposure in summer 2010 by playing gigs and starting to work on their third mixtape.
